Theory Test Practice
Before you can take your practical driving test, you must first pass the DVSA Theory Test, which consists of two parts:
- Multiple-choice questions
- Hazard perception test
Both sections must be passed at the same sitting before you can book your practical driving test.
Multiple-Choice Test
The theory test contains 50 multiple-choice questions covering topics such as:
- The Highway Code
- Road signs
- Vehicle handling
- Safety and awareness
- Rules of the road
- Vulnerable road users
You have 57 minutes to complete the test and need a minimum score of 43 out of 50 to pass.
Before the test begins, you’ll be shown a short tutorial explaining how to use the touchscreen system. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete a few practice questions so that you’re comfortable with the format before your test starts.
During the test you can:
- Move forwards and backwards through the questions
- Change your answers at any time before submitting the test
- Flag questions to return to later
- Review all of your answers before finishing
A countdown timer on the screen will show how much time you have remaining.
Hazard Perception Test
The hazard perception test follows immediately after the multiple-choice section.
You’ll watch 14 video clips featuring everyday road situations and identify developing hazards by clicking the mouse or touching the screen as soon as you spot them.
The sooner you correctly identify a developing hazard, the more points you’ll receive. The maximum score is 75, and you’ll need 44 out of 75 to pass.
